Catastrophic news for amphibians comes as it has been discovered that the devastating fungal disease chytridiomycosis has reached what was the last remaining area in the whole of central America free of the infection, the Darien region of Panama. The disease is believed to have been responsible at least in part for around 100 amphibian species extinctions worldwide. Species that are still fighting, such as this stunning Panamanian golden frog (Atelopus zeteki), are greatly at risk. In total, nearly a third of the earth’s amphibian species are highly endangered as they are forced to contend with habitat loss, climate change and pollution as well as the deadly disease. Hundreds of scientists are working desperately to find a cure before it is too late.
